An Evolving Exhibition

Forward is an exhibition series where artists transform works they've received from others, exhibit the work briefly, then hand it off to someone new.

Forward is in motion. The work presented in each exhibition is impermanent, made to be passed on to a new artist. While in their possession, they are charged with transforming it. They may alter, activate, destroy, refine or redefine the piece in any way, so long as they retain some physical, aesthetic or abstract connection to what they’ve received.

Each year, all revised works will be exhibited together again.

Forward is a continuation of Turn, which connected twelve artists in transformation, taking turns exhibiting a single, changing object every month for a year. As it evolved, they were asked to think of every iteration as a single piece, to consider when it was theirs—and if ever it was not. Forward reiterates this ethos in its aims to expand community, promote awareness of the present, and encourage the ceding of ego within our processes.

Project Director Shaun Kardinal has been engaged in Seattle’s art community since 2006, and in that time has accrued experience in many of its avenues—exhibition and curation, development and design, creation and collection. His alternative exhibition formats connect artists in collaboration, bridging creative gaps lost in the usual work-for-sale exhibition cycle.

Project director Shaun Kardinal and twelve writers presented a physical transformation of words, where geometric forms reshaped vibrant landscape postcards, each containing letters, hand-written with intention.

What change can a year bring? Part 2 revealed first revisions: fifteen creations made of and by the original postcard sculptures exhibited in 2017.
